Flexible working hours can either benefit the employees or be a terrible nuisance to them. Everything depends on who dictates the terms - the employers or the employees. In an ideal world, the system could assist corporations in dealing with sudden spikes in demand and at the same time, provide greater flexibility and freedom to the employees.

Sadly, the rules of flexitime systems are often tailored to the needs of the employer, rather than taking both sides into account. Workers show up when they are needed, not when it suits them best. In extreme situations, this can lead to excessive stress and long days during the busy periods. However, there are also examples of successful transfers to flexible working hours from the standard 9-to-5. In these scenarios, the change has been preceded by negotiations between the employer and the employees. If the parties manage to agree on a basic set of rules, it is likely that the system will provide good results for both. Thus, the concept of flexible working hours itself is not good or bad. Rather, the terms of the system, and ultimately the general atmosphere in the working place, decide whether it will be fruitful or not.
