When society offers benefits without requiring any compensation, some taxpayers tend to become irritated. They understand that the money spent on benefits doesn't grow on trees. Instead, it is taken right out of their pockets through higher taxes.
Whether a solution like this would prove to be cost-effective and reasonable is another matter. The concept was sound in the 50's, but since then, the nature of work has changed. Most jobs no longer demand masses of unskilled workers. Even tasks such as road and rail construction would likely require the unemployed to be trained first. The fact is that there is no simple solution to this problem. Some form of community service could prove beneficial in some situations, but it is unlikely to be very productive in most cases. Creating new jobs and helping the unemployed to find work is the key, not forcing them to do odd jobs for free. | |||||||||||||||||||||
