Opium for the masses

In The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint Exupéry wrote "you can only really see with your heart. Really important things are invisible to the eye." With these words, he attempted to point out the importance of trusting one's feelings instead of one's head. De Saint Exupéry must have noticed that in our actions, we are often guided by our reason rather than our sense of right and wrong. Our hearts may protest, but we refuse to listen.

In addition to encouraging us to hear what our hearts have to say, de Saint Exupéry obviously wanted us to re-evaluate our priorities. Us humans have a tendency of focusing on secondary issues instead of what really matters. We spend our lives chasing promotions so that we could afford a new car or a bigger house. It may mean having to neglect our spouses and our children, but we don't care.

The message sent by the author of The Little Prince is clear, but are we listening? I'm afraid not. We live in a dog-eat-dog world, one where you constantly have to fight to survive. There is little room for sentimentality, for those who are weak are soon trampled in the feet of others. Following de Saint Exupéry's advice seems tempting, but not many of us can do so. It feels as if the very idea is a dream destined never to come true, a bedtime story for those unable to face reality. Or, as Marx aptly put it, opium for the masses.
