Who is the funniest looking, absent minded professor of film industry? The answer is Tim Burton. What make him so special among other Hollywood directors are his very unique ideas which are both funny and scary. Tim has his own fantasy world and extraordinary talent to make movies, his art is a combination of gothic beauty, horror movies and dark humour. In my opinion, his cardinal work is Edward Scissorhands, a magical story about beauty of the beast and love beyond the boundaries.

Timothy William Burton was born on August 25, 1958 in Burbank, California. The area where he lived was a typical 1960s suburbia, bright colours and ladies of the neighbourhood didn't have anything better to do than gossip. Tim didn't fit into this kind of society, so he created another world just for himself. This better world was a fusion of monster and horror movies, lonely moments and drawing. Art has occupied his heart eternally since. Tim attended the California Institute of the Arts after graduating from high school. The year was 1976. Few years later he started his career as an animator in Disney's film The Fox and the Hound. He soon realised that it wasn't his cup of tea and he started to develop his own projects. Animation called Vincent was his first own movie, the year was 1982. The plot is about a boy whose greatest hero is horror movies actor Vincent Price. Since this fantastic animation Burton's career has been merely success; he has made numerous fantastic films and has fans all over the world. He has done adults fairytales, stories which represent our modern culture and how absurd it often is. A good example of this kind of movie is Big Fish, Burton's masterpiece. The plot is about a father and son and their complicated bond. The son thinks that his father only tells lies when he relates stories of his childhood and growing up but in the end son understands that sometimes it is much more fascinating to colorize a little bit stories than tell the pale truth.Edward Scissorhands is one of the most loved Burton's films. The film contains lots of Tim's typical elements: snow, sombre-toned scenery, exceptional young man and innocent beauty. Edward is a sensitive creature made by a nutty inventor, who dies and leaves Edward entirely alone. Luckily one lady adopts him and takes him to a whole new world, which is a typical suburbia filled with pastel colours and narrow-minded people. Because Edward has scissors as hands, he gets suspicious looks and people think that he is vicious. Eventually inhabitants understand that Edward is a harmless soul and doesn't want to hurt anyone. Edward falls in love with beautiful Kim, who first despites him but then sees the beauty of the uncommon boy. Though they can't hold each other physically, their hearts are meant to be together forever. The movie has an incredibly beautiful score composed by Danny Elfman, who has also composed music for Tim's other films. Johnny Depp makes his best role in this widely adored film. At the moment Tim is filming two movies: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Corpse Bride. Let's hope that we can enjoy his films in the future, too.
